International Pop sensation Justin Bieber announced via Twitter that he will be starring as himself in a 3D biopic that is set for release next February. The film will be directed by Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim and will feature tour footage from his Madison Square Garden date will also have the singer narrating his life story.
"Next Valentine’s we r coming with a major 3D Movie telling the story with an Oscar winning director and also filmin the tour at MSG in NYC!! This is so sick!! When the news broke last week that Davis Guggenheim, director of An Inconvenient Truth and Waiting For Superman, was making the Justin Bieber biopic, the internet let out a collective "WTF?" Fortunately, the man sobered up a few days later and decided to use the time more productively, namely by promoting Superman. With Guggenheim gone, the people behind the film have found their new director and this time it's an appropriate choice.
Deadline reports that Jon Chu, the man behind the camera for Step Up 3D, has signed on to direct the film. Production has already begun on the film, with crews down in Nashville filming behind the scenes concert footage. They will continue doing so until his performance at Madison Square Garden on August 31, with all of the footage is being filmed in 3D. According to the report, almost 20 directors offered up their services on the film, but it was Chu's experience with 3D that won him the job.
Really I would just like to have one question answered about this production: how the hell do you make a biopic about a 16 year old? The kid hasn't been alive long enough for there to be anything to document on film. This is the Justin Bieber story: stupid Canadian kid makes a video on YouTube, gets noticed by executives who realize he can be pimped to the Disney audience, and he makes millions of dollars. How the hell do you make this story interesting? The answer is that you don't bother. Kids are going to fill the seats no matter what.
